Gene Slay’s Girls & Boys Club (GSGBC) is committed to the 90+ year history of providing exceptional youth development programs. Our mission is to empower girls and boys in the St. Louis metropolitan area, especially those who need us most, to realize their physical, intellectual and emotional potential. GSGBC utilizes Trauma Informed practices to create an organizational culture that is nonviolent, democratic, socially responsive, fosters emotionally intelligence, growth and change.


  • Maintains active surveillance of the pool area
  • Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately, appropriately and in accordance with GSGBC policies and procedures
  • Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services
  • Develops and implements a proactive safety plan
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency and non-emergency situations
  • Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner
  • Maintains accurate records as required by GSGBC and/or the City of St. Louis Health Department
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed
  • Completes related reports as required
  • Checks and adjusts chemical balance of pool water
  • Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving
  • Maintains the pool in accordance with the City of St. Louis and the Health Commission Ordinance and Chapter 11.79
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions


  • Must be a certified lifeguard with at least 1 year of lifeguard experience
  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills and shall have passed within the last three years a Senior Life Saving test given by the American Red Cross, YMCA, Boy Scouts of America, or other organization approved by the Health Commissioner
  • Certified in CPR by a nationally recognized organization, such as the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or an equivalent certification, including an in-person skills assessment, and be approved by the Department Of Health and Senior Services
  • Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness
  • Highly skilled in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer for extended periods of time and be able to communicate using a computer and phone/smart device.   • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds
  • The employee must endure extreme temperature conditions – up to 95 degrees with 100% humidity
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust
