‘Unions a real asset to St. Louis,’ says club’s executive

True to its continuing spirit of helping where help is needed and at the same time providing training opportunities for its apprentices, Operating Engineers Local 513 spent two days recently at the Gene Slay’s Boys’ Club leveling an area for a new baseball diamond.

This is the second outreach program at the Boy’s Club from Local 513. Last year they helped prepare the grounds for a new community playground and outdoor teaching facility, again using it as a training effort for apprentices. They prepared walkways to the site and bore dozens of post holds to anchor playground equipment.

“We are always pleased to be able to help non-profit groups that provide incredible services to our community,” said Local 513 Business Manager Pat Kammer. “Like so many other unions, we feel it’s part of our responsibility to our community; it also serves a dual purpose giving our apprentices real-world experience on job sites. We proud to be able to help the Boys Club again. They do a great job for so many youngsters.”

And we appreciate Local 513’s support and the support of so many unions, said Club Executive Director Prescot Benson, “whether it’s in direct support like those Local 513 and other locals have provided or helping in our golf tournament, we can always count on St. Louis’ union community. The unions are a real asset to St. Louis.”
