Visual & Performing Arts

The Arts Program is committed to helping kids learn about and explore art in their daily lives. Interacting with art can improve motivation, concentration, confidence, teamwork, and cognitive development.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT: EncoreSTL

GSGBC members participated in The Foundational Frame (Mini-Project). Projects included:

  • Phase 1: Onboarding/Storymapping the "Summer Narrative" → Plot & Character Mapping

  • Phase 2: Skill Build/Monologue & Vocal Technique → Diction and Projection

  • Phase 3: Tech Intro/Storyboarding for the Camera → Visual Literacy: Sequencing Narrative Beats

The EncoreSTL summer sessions started off with improv exercises to

  • Build members' confidence

  • Embrace uncertainty

  • Celebrate mistakes

  • Trust their instincts.

EncoreSTL Teaching Artists guided members to develop scripts for When the City Goes Live, an original summer production created at Gene Slay’s Girls & Boys Club in partnership with EncoreSTL. Members improved and refined their skills in literacy and performing arts areas such as Plot & Character Mapping, Diction & Projection, and Sequencing Narrative Beats, Acting, & Movement.
