What is Give GSGBC Week?

Give GSGBC Week is a weeklong highlight of the programs that support the girls and boys who attend our Club. Our top priority is giving kids a safe place to go after school and during the summer. While attending GSGBC, they are offered new opportunities and experiences under the guidances of caring mentors. Through out the week of August 9-15, we will be giving a look into our programs, why they are important, and how they make an impact on the kids who need us most. Each day will be devoted to one core program. Help us sustain our mission year round by supporting a program that speaks to you. Give GSGBC Week starts here!

Joining us this week in supporting one or more of GSGBC's high-quality programs means sustaining our work year-round, empowering the kids who need us most, and providing a safe place to go. Our work is possible thanks to our community.

Day 1  | August 9
Introductions & History

GSGBC was founded in 1929 as the first boys club of Missouri under the leadership of Fr. Charles Maxwell. With beginnings in St. Vincent's Parish, the Club moved to various locations in Soulard before settling in its current location on 11th Street in 1959. Throughout the 60s and 70s, the Club became an athletic powerhouse. In 2006, we renamed to Gene's Slay's Boys Club after alumnus and former board president Gene Slay. In 2015, we officially opened to girls, becoming Gene Slay's Girls and Boys Club, as you know it today.

For nearly 100 years, GSGBC has served the youth in St. Louis, providing them with a safe place to go. We continue to grow and adapt to meet the current needs of our youth. Introduction of the tutoring program has increased reading levels and continues to support kids as they grow in their education. The development of the meal program has provided kids with the energy they need to learn and grow. Site-based programming at St. Frances Cabrini and St. Cecilia schools has allowed us to reach more families in our service area.
