A Place to Grow

A campaign for the next 100 years

Since 1929, Gene Slay's Girls & Boys Club (GSGBC) has been providing high-quality afterschool and summer programs to children ages 6-16 in south St. Louis. For nearly 100 years, GSGBC has given St. Louis youth opportunities for successful futures through academic enrichment, life-changing programs, and a safe place to go.

GSGBC is advancing a truly transformative campaign to build a new, intentionally designed, expanded, and fully accessible center for youth in South St. Louis. This campaign will result in a new building as well as an increase to GSGBC’s brand, reach, impact, and sustainability.

The Campaign

In order to continue our services for the next 100 years, the GSGBC Board of Directors has made the strategic decision to invest in a brand new facility in the heart of where our kids live.

GSGBC has been operating most of its programs out of its main facility in Soulard since 1959.

Through our long history, this location has served us well, but the building is aging and requires maintenance and significant upgrades to remain functional and cost effective.

The current location is insufficient to meet the need in St. Louis’ Southeast Quadrant, where our kids live. The majority of our kids come from the neighborhoods of Dutchtown, Gravois Park, Marine Villa, Mt. Pleasant, and Bevo. This area has the highest density of kids living in St. Louis City. Bringing the Club to where our families live will reach more kids and offer stability to this area. Our families struggle with poverty, crime, and a lack of vital resources.  The new campus will be designed to fit the current needs of our members and be in the heart of where St. Louis youth live. It will have state of the art features for academics, athletics, and arts.

The Place to Grow

The chosen location for “A Place to Grow” is on the corner of Grand & Delor, next to St. Mary’s Southside Catholic High School. A partnership with St. Mary’s is the most powerful and important collaboration for youth in St. Louis. GSGBC feels that the placement of the new campus is a vital move towards helping to stabilize the neighborhood. This is an opportune location to sit proudly on a main South St. Louis street, providing outreach to the population that needs us most.
